His status as either a full, reserve, or honorary member of the League is debatable. After a vote of the majority of the team in Justice League of America #103, they offered him membership, with Superman declaring the Stranger 'a member' without qualification, though he left before accepting. This issue was part of an unofficial with, spanning titles from both of the major comics companies. Beginning in Marvel's #16 (by with art by and ), the story continued in DC's Justice League of America #103 (by Len Wein, and ), and is concluded in #207 (by and penciler ). Each comic featured writers Steve Englehart, Gerry Conway, and Len Wein, as well as Wein's first wife, Marvel or DC characters at the in. The Phantom Stranger has at least twice asserted his membership status when other Leaguers challenged his input, during the vote on the League's re-admission of and during the crossover with The.
In contrast, many in-story accounts of League membership fail to include the Stranger; when Zatanna was admitted as a member, Superman and Hawkman clarified that the twelve-member limit in the League's charter had been rewritten previously to admit Hawkgirl as the thirteenth. Writer Len Wein commented on the Phantom Stranger's relationship with the JLA in a 2012 interview stating that the character 'only sort of joined. He was offered membership but vanished, as per usual, without actually accepting the offer.
Over the years, other writers have just assumed he was a member, but in my world, he never really said yes.' The Stranger also starred in a mini-series in 1987. Fictional character biography Origin Unusual for a comic book character of such longevity, nothing in the way of personal data about the Phantom Stranger—his real name, his true nature, or his origins—has ever been revealed. DC produced a special issue of that postulated four possible origins:. The Stranger was a man in Biblical times who was spared God's wrath by an angel. Questioning God's actions, he commits suicide. The angel forbids his spirit from entering the afterlife, reanimates his body and condemns him to walk the world forever as part of humanity, but also forever separated from it. He then discovers his divine charge: to turn humanity away from evil, one soul at a time.
Some versions of this story imply that the angel was the incarnation of of that time period. In a variation of the story, he was a man named Isaac with a wife (Rebecca) and a son during the time of.
When heard that there was born a child who would be king of the Jews, he orders the in order to kill the Christ child. Among the people killed were Isaac's wife and son. The Phantom Stranger realizes that one of the scientists is in reality an Avatar of Anti-life, and that their efforts will prevent the universe from ever existing. The story concludes with the Phantom Stranger passing a portion of himself to a scientist, who dives through the portal to the Big Bang, intercepts the beam that would have drained the Big Bang, and becomes the Phantom Stranger, completing the cycle. The Phantom Stranger was a who sided with neither nor during and thus was condemned to walk the Earth alone for all time. In the comic book miniseries The, sees that the fourth origin story is essentially correct. The Vertigo Visions: Phantom Stranger one-shot by and builds upon Moore's fallen angel story and adds the story of the woman Naamah, who was condemned to Hell for loving an angel.
This angel is strongly hinted to have become the Phantom Stranger. Another possible origin was hinted at in (the sequel to ) in which it was implied that Jonathan Kent, the future son of and Wonder Woman, might grow up to be the Phantom Stranger. This also tied some of his abilities into the concept, giving him the innate ability to enter alternate timelines and to exist in the spaces between them. The story ultimately revealed this to be a.
The character in question had been deliberately drawn in shadows to suggest that he was the Stranger; but when Wonder Woman finally saw his face, she said that she now realized he was not the Stranger they knew. His appearances in titles featuring reveal that the Stranger was a servant of the during the Ninth Age of Magic (at least). This may be a later development unrelated to his actual origin. In Phantom Stranger #0 (2012), the Phantom Stranger is. He is judged by the Circle of Eternity, who are implied to be proxies for a higher power.
The Stranger is condemned to walk the Earth forever as an agent of God. He wears a necklace made of the thirty pieces of silver which he took as payment for betraying Jesus. (January 2018) In his earliest appearances, the Phantom Stranger would prove events to be perpetrated by criminals. He would directly confront the villains, and displayed no supernatural abilities apart from his uncanny ability to appear where and when he is needed and to disappear just as mysteriously, with nobody ever seeing him coming or going. In later stories, the supernatural events were real and the Phantom Stranger was given unspecified powers to defeat them. For example, he was able to control a smoke-based sedative with a gesture, claiming smoke itself is his ally.
In his second comic book series, the Phantom Stranger became a truly supernatural hero. The Phantom Stranger played a major part in 's, taking protagonist through time to show him the history and nature of. He has assisted the Justice League on numerous occasions, even being formally elected to the group in Justice League of America #103 although he did not acknowledge his membership until Justice League of America #143. The Stranger also had his own limited series, where, lacking much of his power, he tries to foil Eclipso's plan to cause a nuclear war. The Phantom Stranger in a typically cryptic pose. In his early comic book appearances, the Stranger's garb was a black trenchcoat over a black suit and black tie, as shown here.
His now familiar black cape, white rolled-neck sweater, and gold medallion would come later. During 's relaunch of, he prevented from uniting the resurrected body of Oliver Queen with his soul in Heaven. This earned him Jordan's wrath; indeed, the threatened to judge the Stranger to see whether God had 'punished' him properly by refusing him access to Heaven itself. Nonetheless, the Phantom Stranger assisted Hal Jordan during his tenure as the Spectre on numerous occasions as well, most notably in a short stint babysitting Hal's niece, Helen. In 2005's, the Stranger had been turned into a small rodent by the Spectre.
Upon the Spectre's confrontation and battle with the Stranger, the Stranger states: 'You can't kill me. I doubt that the Universe would allow it.' He was still able to advise, who sheltered him in his hat while he recovered his powers. He changed back using recovered energies in Day of Vengeance #6 and aided the, allowing them to see the battle between the Spectre. The series makes a point that the supernatural community generally regards the Phantom Stranger as invincible. The first reaction of some characters to the Spectre's assault on magic is simply to presume that the Stranger will take care of it. Other stories have shown the Stranger nearly as powerful as the Spectre.
In the Day of Vengeance: Infinite Crisis Special, The Phantom Stranger works with, the Shadowpact, and other mystics to re-form the Rock of Eternity and help defeat the maddened Spectre. The Phantom Stranger's relationships with the other mystic heroes are usually a bit tense. The Stranger has no qualms gathering various forces in order to combat a certain evil (the Sentinels of Magic, but also other loose outfits), often invading those people's personal lives. However, he does not usually extend them that same courtesy. The Phantom Stranger has resisted such people as (notably ) in this, although Doctor Fate is, in almost any incarnation, an ally of the Stranger. Despite this, he does get along well with Zatanna; in Justice League of America #6, he appeared by her side to help remove the influence of Faust on Red Tornado, and in the Justice series he seems to have a fatherly affection for her, calling her 'my dear.' Since he is ultimately an unpredictable force, others often meet the Phantom Stranger's appearance with distrust.
Nonetheless, most heroes will follow him, seeing not only his immense power, but also knowing that the Stranger is, in the end, a force for good. – Immortality is eternal life, the ability to live forever. At least one species has potential biological immortality, Turritopsis dohrnii, other advocates believe that life extension is a more achievable goal in the short term, with immortality awaiting further research breakthroughs. The absence of aging would provide humans with biological immortality, but not invulnerability to death by physical trauma, whether the process of internal endoimmortality is delivered within the upcoming years depends chiefly on research in the former view and perhaps is an awaited goal in the latter case. In religious contexts, immortality is often stated to be one of the promises of God to human beings who show goodness or else follow divine law, Life extension technologies promise a path to complete rejuvenation. Cryonics holds out the hope that the dead can be revived in the future, while, as shown with creatures such as hydra and planarian worms, it is indeed possible for a creature to be biologically immortal, it is not known if it is possible for humans.
Mind uploading is the transference of brain states from a brain to an alternative medium providing similar functionality. Assuming the process to be possible and repeatable, this would provide immortality to the computation of the original brain, the soul itself has different meanings and is not used in the same way in different religions and different denominations of a religion.
For example, various branches of Christianity have disagreeing views on the souls immortality, physical immortality is a state of life that allows a person to avoid death and maintain conscious thought. It can mean the unending existence of a person from a source other than organic life.
There are three causes of death, aging, disease and physical trauma. Such issues can be resolved with the provided in research to any end providing such alternate theories at present that require unification. Eliminating aging would require finding a solution to each of these causes, there is also a huge body of knowledge indicating that change is characterized by the loss of molecular fidelity. Disease is theoretically surmountable via technology, in short, it is an abnormal condition affecting the body of an organism, something the body shouldnt typically have to deal with its natural make up. Human understanding of genetics is leading to cures and treatments for previously incurable diseases. The mechanisms by which other diseases do their damage are becoming better understood, sophisticated methods of detecting diseases early are being developed. Preventative medicine is becoming better understood, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinsons and Alzheimers may soon be curable with the use of stem cells.
Breakthroughs in cell biology and telomere research are leading to treatments for cancer, vaccines are being researched for AIDS and tuberculosis. Genes associated with type 1 diabetes and certain types of cancer have been discovered, artificial devices attached directly to the nervous system may restore sight to the blind 2. – A paranormal phenomenon is different from hypothetical concepts such as dark matter and dark energy. Unlike paranormal phenomena, these concepts are based on empirical observations. The most notable paranormal beliefs include those that pertain to ghosts, extraterrestrial life, unidentified flying objects, psychic abilities or extrasensory perception, the term paranormal has existed in the English language since at least 1920. The word consists of two parts, para and normal, the definition implies that the scientific explanation of the world around us is normal and anything that is above, beyond, or contrary to that is para. On the classification of paranormal subjects, Terence Hines in his book Pseudoscience, what sets the paranormal apart from other pseudosciences is a reliance on explanations for alleged phenomena that are well outside the bounds of established science.
Thus, paranormal phenomena include extrasensory perception, telekinesis, ghosts, poltergeists, life after death, reincarnation, faith healing, human auras, the explanations for these allied phenomena are phrased in vague terms of psychic forces, human energy fields, and so on. This is in contrast to many pseudoscientific explanations for other nonparanormal phenomena, in traditional belief and fiction, a ghost is a manifestation of the spirit or soul of a person.
Alternative theories expand on that idea and include belief in the ghosts of deceased animals, sometimes the term ghost is used synonymously with any spirit or demon, however in popular usage the term typically refers to a deceased persons spirit. The belief in ghosts as souls of the departed is closely tied to the concept of animism, as the 19th-century anthropologist George Frazer explained in his classic work, The Golden Bough, souls were seen as the creature within that animated the body. Although the evidence for ghosts is largely anecdotal, the belief in ghosts throughout history has remained widespread, the possibility of extraterrestrial life is not, by itself, a paranormal subject. Many scientists are engaged in the search for unicellular life within the solar system, carrying out studies on the surface of Mars. Projects such as SETI are conducting a search for radio activity that would show evidence of intelligent life outside the solar system.
Scientific theories of how life developed on Earth allow for the possibility that life developed on other planets as well, the paranormal aspect of extraterrestrial life centers largely around the belief in unidentified flying objects and the phenomena said to be associated with them. Early in the history of UFO culture, believers divided themselves into two camps, the first held a rather conservative view of the phenomena, interpreting them as unexplained occurrences that merited serious study.
They began calling themselves ufologists in the 1950s and felt that logical analysis of sighting reports would validate the notion of extraterrestrial visitation, the second camp consisted of individuals who coupled ideas of extraterrestrial visitation with beliefs from existing quasi-religious movements. These individuals typically were enthusiasts of occultism and the paranormal, many had backgrounds as active Theosophists, Spiritualists, or were followers of other esoteric doctrines. In contemporary times, many of these beliefs have coalesced into New Age spiritual movements, both secular and spiritual believers describe UFOs as having abilities beyond what are considered possible according to known aerodynamic constraints and physical laws. The transitory events surrounding many UFO sightings also limits the opportunity for repeat testing required by the scientific method, acceptance of UFO theories by the larger scientific community is further hindered by the many possible hoaxes associated with UFO culture 3. – Adams was inducted into the Eisner Awards Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998, and the Harvey Awards Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1999.
Neal Adams was born on Governors Island, New York City, New York, at the suggestion of staffers, Adams drew three or four pages of the Fly, but did not receive encouragement from Simon. Sympathetic staffers nonetheless asked Adams to draw samples for the Archie teen-humor comics themselves, while he did so, Adams said in a 2000s interview, he unknowingly broke into comics, I started to do samples for Archie and I left my Fly samples there. A couple weeks later when I came in to show my Archie samples, I noticed that the pages were still there and they said, One of the artists did this transition where Tommy Troy turns into the Fly and its not very good. You did this real nice piece so we’ll use that, if its OK and that panel ran in Adventures of the Fly #4. Afterward, Adams began writing, penciling, inking, and lettering humorous full-page and half-page gag fillers for Archies Joke Book Magazine, in a 1976 interview, he recalled earning bout $16.00 per half page and $32.00 for a full page.
That may not seem like a deal of money. As we were not in a wealthy state and it was manna from heaven, so to speak. Having not left Archie Comics under the best of circumstances, Adams turned to art for the advertising industry. After a rocky start freelancing, he began landing regular work at the Johnstone and Cushing agency, but they gave me a chance. I stayed there for about a year, in 1962, Adams began his comics career in earnest at the NEA newspaper syndicate.
From a recommendation, writer Jerry Caplin, a. A, Jerry Capp, brother of Lil Abner creator Al Capp, invited Adams to draw samples for Capps proposed Ben Casey comic strip, based on the popular television medical-drama series. On the strength of his samples and of his Chip Martin, College Reporter AT&T advertising comic-strip pages in Boys Life magazine, the first daily strip, which carried Adams signature, appeared November 26,1962, a color Sunday strip was added September 20,1964.
Adams continued to do Johnston & Cushing assignments during Ben Caseys 3 1/2-year run, Comics historian Maurice Horn said the strip did not shrink from tackling controversial problems, such as heroin addiction, illegitimate pregnancy, and attempted suicide. These were usually treated in soap opera fashion, but there was also a touch of toughness to the proceedings, well rendered by Adams in a forceful, direct style that exuded realism and tension and accorded well with the overall tone of the strip. In addition to Capp, Jerry Brondfield also wrote for the strip, the ABC series, which ran five seasons, ended March 21,1966, with the final comic strip appearing Sunday, July 31,1966. I wasnt happy working on the strip nor was I happy giving up a third of the money to Bing Crosby Productions, the strip I should have been making twelve hundred a week from was making me three hundred to three-fifty a week. On top of that, I was not able to express myself artistically when I wanted to, but we left under very fine conditions 4. – Marvel Comics is the common name and primary imprint of Marvel Worldwide Inc.
Formerly Marvel Publishing, Inc. And Marvel Comics Group, an American publisher of comic books and related media. In 2009, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment, Marvel Worldwides parent company, Marvel started in 1939 as Timely Publications, and by the early 1950s had generally become known as Atlas Comics. Marvels modern incarnation dates from 1961, the year that the company launched The Fantastic Four and other superhero titles created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and many others. Most of Marvels fictional characters operate in a reality known as the Marvel Universe. Martin Goodman founded the later known as Marvel Comics under the name Timely Publications in 1939. Martin Goodman, a magazine publisher who had started with a Western pulp in 1933, was expanding into the emerging—and by then already highly popular—new medium of comic books.
The issue was a success, with it and a second printing the following month selling, combined. While its contents came from an outside packager, Funnies, Inc, Timely had its own staff in place by the following year. It, too, proved a hit, with sales of one million. Goodman formed Timely Comics, Inc. Beginning with comics cover-dated April 1941 or Spring 1941, Goodman hired his wifes cousin, Stanley Lieber, as a general office assistant in 1939. Lee wrote extensively for Timely, contributing to a number of different titles, Goodmans business strategy involved having his various magazines and comic books published by a number of corporations all operating out of the same office and with the same staff. One of these companies through which Timely Comics was published was named Marvel Comics by at least Marvel Mystery Comics #55.
As well, some covers, such as All Surprise Comics #12, were labeled A Marvel Magazine many years before Goodman would formally adopt the name in 1961. The post-war American comic market saw superheroes falling out of fashion and this globe branding united a line put out by the same publisher, staff and freelancers through 59 shell companies, from Animirth Comics to Zenith Publications. Atlas also published a plethora of childrens and teen humor titles, including Dan DeCarlos Homer the Happy Ghost, Atlas unsuccessfully attempted to revive superheroes from late 1953 to mid-1954, with the Human Torch, the Sub-Mariner, and Captain America. Atlas did not achieve any hits and, according to Stan Lee, Atlas survived chiefly because it produced work quickly, cheaply. During this time, the Comic Code Authority made its debut in September 1954, Wertham published the book Seduction of the Innocent in order to force people to see that comics were impacting American youth. He believed violent comics were causing children to be reckless and were turning them into delinquents, in September 1954, comic book publishers got together to set up their own self-censorship organization—the Comics Magazine Association of America—in order to appease audiences 5.
– Thor is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He has starred in several ongoing series and limited series, and is a member of the superhero team the Avengers. The character has appeared in associated Marvel merchandise including animated television series, clothing, toys, trading cards, video games. The character was first portrayed in action by Eric Allan Kramer in the 1988 television movie The Incredible Hulk Returns. Thor placed 14th on IGNs list of Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time in 2011, a different version of the mythological Thor had appeared previously in Venus #12-13. Lee in 2002 described Thors genesis early in the Marvel pantheon, following the creation of the Hulk and it finally came to me, Dont make him human — make him a god. I decided readers were already pretty familiar with the Greek and Roman gods and it might be fun to delve into the old Norse legends.
In a 1984 interview Kirby said I did a version of Thor for D. In the fifties before I did him for Marvel. I created Thor at Marvel because I was forever enamored of legends, which is why I knew about Balder, Heimdall, I tried to update Thor and put him into a superhero costume, but he was still Thor.
And in a 1992 interview, Kirby said knew the Thor legends very well, I felt that might be a new thing for comics, taking the old legends and modernizing them. Subsequent stories of the 13-page feature The Mighty Thor continued to be plotted by Lee, various artists penciled the feature, including Jack Kirby, Joe Sinnott, Don Heck, and Al Hartley. With Journey into Mystery #101, the series began a long and definitive run by writer and co-plotter Lee, Lee and Kirby included Thor in The Avengers #1 as a founding member of the superhero team. The character has appeared in every subsequent volume of the series. The five-page featurette Tales of Asgard was added in Journey into Mystery #97, the feature itself expanded to 18 pages in #105, which eliminated the remaining anthological story from each issue, it was reduced to 16 pages five issues later.
Comics historian Les Daniels noted that the adventures of Thor were gradually transformed from stories about a superhero into a spectacular saga. Artist Chic Stone, who inked several early Thor stories, observed that Kirby could just lead you through all these different worlds, the readers would follow him anywhere. Journey into Mystery was retitled Thor with issue #126, Tales of Asgard was replaced by a five-page featurette starring the Inhumans from #146–152, after which featurettes were dropped and the Thor stories expanded to Marvels then-standard 20-page length. Marvel filed for a trademark for The Mighty Thor in 1967, after Kirby left the title, Neal Adams penciled issues #180-181 6. – His younger brother Sal Buscema is also a comic book artist. Buscema is best known for his run on the series The Avengers and The Silver Surfer, in addition, he pencilled at least one issue of nearly every major Marvel title, including long runs on two of the companys top magazines Fantastic Four and Thor.
He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2002, born in Brooklyn, New York City, John Buscema showed an interest in drawing at an early age, copying comic strips such as Popeye. He showed an interest in commercial illustrators of the period, such as N. C, wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Dean Cornwell, Coby Whitmore, Albert Dorne, and Robert Fawcett. Buscema graduated from Manhattans High School of Music and Art and he took night lessons at Pratt Institute as well as life drawing classes at the Brooklyn Museum.
While training as a boxer, he began painting portraits of boxers, colan recalled that. John never seemed very happy in comics.
There always seemed to be something else he wanted to do. His first recorded credit is penciling the four-page story Till Crime Do You Part in Timelys Lawbreakers Always Lose #3. He contributed to the dramatic series True Adventures and Man Comics, as well as to Cowboy Romances, Two-Gun Western, Lorna the Jungle Queen. Buscema next produced a series of Western, war, and sword, Buscema recalled, I did a bunch of their movie books. I worked from stills on those, except for The Vikings.
I think one of the best books I ever did was Sinbad the Sailor. He began a position for the New York City advertising firm the Chaite Agency. Buscema called this time quite a period for me in my own development of techniques. He returned to comic books in 1966 as a regular freelance penciller for Marvel Comics, debuting over Jack Kirby layouts on the Nick Fury, Story in Strange Tales #150, followed by three Hulk stories in Tales to Astonish #85-87. He then settled in as regular penciller of The Avengers, which would one of his signature series.
Avengers #49-50, featuring Hercules and inked by Buscema, are two of his best-looking of that period, said comics historian and one-time Marvel editor-in-chief Roy Thomas, Thomas and Buscema introduced new versions of the Black Knight and the Vision during their collaboration on The Avengers. The process brought Buscemas art to life in a way that it had never been before, anatomically balanced figures of Herculean proportions stalked, stormed, sprawled, and savaged their way across Marvels universe like none had previously.
John Buscema named Frank Giacoia, Sal Buscema, and Tom Palmer as his favorite inkers, Buscema drew the first appearance of the Prowler in The Amazing Spider-Man #78 7. – The city of Rutland is the seat of Rutland County, Vermont, United States. At the same time, the quarries of Carrara in Tuscany, Italy, grew largely unworkable because of their extreme depth. This fueled enough growth and investment that in 1886 the center of town incorporated as Rutland village, most of the town was split off as West Rutland and Proctor, which contained the bulk of the marble quarries.
